They are particularly popular in December, when especially close to December 25, people sing them in church choirs, school concerts, home gatherings, and door-to-door caroling. The word carol originates from the Greek word choraulein. The familiar tunes start to appear after Thanksgiving and continue until December 25.  The lyrics of many of the carols involve religious themes.

Because carols have been around so long, people are familiar and comfortable with the tunes and lyrics. This has prompted many modern-day musicians to redo some of the most familiar and classic carols in their own brand of music…and so, if you turn on the radio today, you’ll find many of the favorites have been redone as rock, country (keeping many of the same lyrics) or instrumental versions, freshening up the holidays for people that have heard the same carols year after year.
